What is backflow?

When clean water runs in reverse.

Normally, clean water from your local supply flows smoothly into your home. But a pressure change in your plumbing can reverse that flow.

This is called backflow. It can force contaminated water back into your home’s supply and the public water system, exposing your family and community to harmful chemicals, bacteria, and other contaminants.

What causes backflow

A sudden drop in water pressure.

When pressure suddenly changes, contaminated water can reverse direction and flow back into your clean water supply.

Garden hose attachments

If pressure drops while a pesticide or fertilizer sprayer is attached, suction can pull those chemicals into your plumbing.

Hydrant use nearby

Firefighters drawing water from a nearby hydrant can trigger a dangerous backflow event.

Water main repairs

City crews repairing a broken water main can cause sudden pressure changes.
