Why it matters
Correct commissioning is essential.
A natural-gas tankless combination boiler efficiently provides both space heating and hot water, but even a high-quality boiler can’t be expected to perform properly just because it’s mounted and connected.
Hire a licensed, qualified plumber or heating contractor trained to use a calibrated combustion analyzer. It measures oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, flue-gas temperature, and calculated efficiency, so the readings can be checked against the manufacturer’s ranges.
Gas pressure, fuel composition, venting, altitude, and air supply all affect combustion. A gas valve may need a minor adjustment after installation, but only by a qualified technician with a calibrated analyzer following the manufacturer’s exact procedure, never by eye or flame appearance.

At the end of a new installation, the boiler should be tested at the firing rates the manufacturer requires, and you should get a printed combustion report that identifies:
- The appliance
- The date
- The technician
- The operating mode or firing rate
- The measured combustion values
Ideally the readings also go on the manufacturer’s commissioning form, kept with the boiler’s service records. Combustion testing belongs in annual maintenance too, with a fresh report every year: comparing them can reveal changes before they become expensive or dangerous.
